Hollywood’s most glamorous night has come and gone…which means it’s time for a red carpet recap.
The Academy Awards are known for being traditional and classic Hollywood. However, they still bring some of the most anticipated red carpet style.
In fact, that carpet has seen some of the best fashion (Michelle Williams in that yellow Vera Wang, Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz)… and also some of the worst- Cher circa 1986, anyone? Or how about Angelina Jolie’s Morticia Adams-esque look of 2000? And then Gwyneth Paltrow’s appalling 2002 choice…
The 2012 Oscars saw most celebrities playing it safe on the red carpet- but there were definitely still some hits and misses.
Here are our takes on the best (and worst) looks of the night:
Michelle Williams in Louis Vuitton
M: Spectacular. Although I don’t think she’ll ever surpass her yellow Vera Wang, she still looks stunning in this red concoction. Although I could do without that ruff in the middle. Either way, she looks great- a huge improvement over her Golden Globes choice this year.
L: This dress is a silk and organza fantasy. I way prefer this dress over the yellow VW – love the fabric, texture and contrast against her pale skin.
Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen
M: Love her, love McQueen. And together, they make a great pair. She looks flawless and regal.
L: I completely disagree. I commend her for choosing such a bold print but I think it was too over-the-top. It resembled upholstery more than an Oscars gown. Her hair and $2 million of Harry Winston bling were nice though.
Rooney Mara in Givenchy
M: Rooney’s been dominating the red carpet. Loved her simple black gown at the Golden Globes, but this white, lacy number is beyond lovely. The blunt bangs work for her, too.
L: I had high expectations of Rooney Mara – especially after the spread of all her recent red carpet hits in the March issue of Vogue – and she did not disappoint. I love the combination of sharp features, black hair, red lips, and edgy bangs with the prettiness of this dress.
Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford
M: Definitely not a fashion miss this year! Gwyneth is a vision in white- a colour that dominated the red carpet this year. Personally, I think she wore it best, although Octavia Spencer was a close second.
L: I was surprised to see so much white on the red carpet – but this one was in a league of its own. I was not expecting to see a cape, either, let alone one fabulous enough to make me want to wear one.
Berenice Bejo in Ellie Saab
M: On to worst-dressed… That green. Those strange bedazzles.
L: Awesome hair but she’s in second place for worst dressed. I like the shape but hate the colour and trim.
Stacy Keibler in Marchesa
M: I’m torn on this one. Yes, she looks like a life-sized Oscar, and the liquid gold look could (and should) have been avoided. But somehow she still looks beautiful…maybe because she’s George Clooney’s arm-candy. Either way.
L: And the winner for worst dressed is…. DING DING DING. Hate it. Hate the colour, texture, style, and that hideous flower. I’m a huge fan of Marchesa – and before this, I was not aware they made ugly dresses.
Melissa Leo in Reem Acra
M: Umm…was she on her way to an ’80′s disco party at a church? Boring cut, too much sparkle.
L: I love sequins, but there is way too much going on here – and that collar is horrible. She needs to fire her stylist. Yikes!
